Urbans Benywanira

Urbans works with governments across emerging markets and developing economies helping them engage effectively in high-integrity carbon markets through policy analysis, technical assistance, and direct stakeholder engagement.

Prior to joining VCMI, Urbans served as an Article 6 and Carbon Pricing Expert at the UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centre for East and Southern Africa, and as Interim Coordinator of the Eastern Africa Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance — supporting governments and private sector actors across the region to build carbon market readiness. He has also advised the Global Green Growth Institute on carbon market readiness assessments in Uganda and across Eastern Africa.

Earlier in his career, Urbans led carbon finance operations for the Improved Cook Stoves for East Africa programme, overseeing projects across Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya. He holds a Master’s in Climate and Society from Mekelle University, Ethiopia, and a Bachelor’s in Environmental Management from Makerere University, Uganda, and has co-authored publications on climate adaptation and sustainable waste technologies.
