Why supporting governments to access carbon markets is vital
High-integrity carbon markets can channel much-needed climate and development finance to projects that preserve forests, restore ecosystems, enable climate-smart agriculture, widen access to clean energy access and catalyze innovation.
Yet many emerging markets and developing economies – those with most to gain from carbon markets – are unable to access carbon finance because it requires specialized knowledge along with tailored market infrastructure, including enabling policies and regulation.
These barriers are holding back emerging markets and developing economies from leveraging carbon markets to help drive decarbonization and build climate-resilient economies while simultaneously advancing their sustainable development priorities.
