Launch of the VCMI Claims Code: Credits, Claims and Credibility

On 28th June, the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity initiative (VCMI) will hold a global launch event for its Claims Code of Practice.

The VCMI’s Claims Code of Practice has been developed to give buyers of carbon credits confidence and clarity in their use and associated claims. It is the go-to rulebook for organizations navigating the complex landscape of carbon markets, in particular for how they can use and make credible claims involving carbon credits as part of their climate commitments.

The launch event will provide an overview of the Claims Code of Practice and will feature internationally recognized carbon markets and net-zero experts, including VCMI Co-Chairs Rachel Kyte and Tariye Gbadegesin, climate leaders, and representatives from government and civil society.

The launch event will explore:

  • How the Claims Code will help to underpin integrity in voluntary carbon markets (VCMs)
  • How the work of VCMI collaborates with, and expands on, other leading initiatives and guidance in the market, including the ICVCM Core Carbon Principles and Science Based Target initiative’s (SBTi) Net-Zero Standard
  • How the Claims Code will ensure the credibility of VCMI claims made by companies from November
  • Steps that companies using the Claims Code will need to take to credibly make voluntary use of carbon credits as part of their net zero commitments, and utilize the Code as evidence of this

Launch of the VCMI Stakeholder Forum

The launch event also marks the announcement of the VCMI Stakeholder Forum. This is a group of participants spanning diverse backgrounds, experiences, and geographies who will act as a market sounding board for VCMI. The Forum will capture a broad range of views and perspectives from across global carbon markets, to ensure that VCMI guidance is well designed, easy to understand and effective.
